Credit Debt

Many people have the burden of having too much credit card debt and feel like they are stuck in a crisis with no way out. Often times people in this situation are so overwhelmed by their debt that they can’t see beyond the problem. If you are in this situation you are not alone and there are ways to resolve your debt burden. The first step is to understand your options so you can make an educated decision on the best solution for your debt situation.

There are many options to get your credit debt under control. Credit counseling, debt consolidation, debt settlement or debt negations are the most common solutions to debt problems. Bankruptcy is also a common route people take to alleviate debt crisis but it is advised to only file for bankruptcy as a last resource. Each option to get your credit debt under control is discussed in more detail in the following paragraphs.

There are credit counseling companies that will work on your behalf with the credit card companies to negotiate lower interest rates on your credit debt. Some credit counselors will also attempt to have over-the-limit and late payment and fees abated. You would be set up on a monthly payment plan that is disbursed to your creditors by the credit counseling company instead of paying the credit card companies directly. At the end of the plan you will have paid back the full amount of your credit card debt including interest. The fee for credit counseling service varies according to each company.

Another solution to your credit card debt is to consolidate. There are a couple of ways to consolidate credit debt. One approach is to transfer all of your credit card balances to one card with a lower interest rate. Or if you are a homeowner with available equity in your home, you can consolidate your debt with a home equity loan or line of credit. By consolidating all of your credit card debt to one lower interest loan you can pay off the debt faster and save hundreds in interest.

Debt settlement or negotiation is an option when you are in financial hardship and are also in crisis with your credit card debt. Debt settlement companies have relationships with numerous credit card companies and can negotiate the amount of debt you will be required to pay back based on a percentage of the total amount owed. This route can save you from paying back the full amount of your credit debt but it can be more detrimental to your credit history than other options.

We encourage that you research each option to make the best decision for resolving your credit card debt burden. No matter what your debt situation is, there is a solution for you. There are many reputable service providers in each category to choose from. Take the first step to getting your credit debt under control today.
